Middle School (6-8) Curriculum

Social Studies

The middle school social studies department begins with Ancient World History in sixth grade.  Covering eras such as the Egyptians, Chinese, Indian, and Roman, the sixth graders interact with each other on a variety of projects including the ancient Greek Olympics and Roman chariot races.  In the seventh grade, they study U.S. history from pre European, through colonization, revolution, the Constitution, westward expansion, the Civil War, and ending with Reconstruction.  World Geography in the eighth grade centers on the Five Geographic Themes: location, place, human/environment interaction, movement and region.  The students produce a variety of projects using program technology such as Power Point and Publisher covering the Five Themes or various cultures of world countries. Science

At Assumption we believe in the following quote. "Science without God is like a bird without wings".  Well...here at Assumption, we are going to soar!  The study of creation is simply awe-inspiring.  By studying matter and how intricate it is and the many patterns and principles that govern our physical world, we will come to better appreciate the wonders of Our Creator!

Assumption’s Middle School Science Curriculum is driven by a textbook and enhanced with hands on experiments and activities in labs.  Sixth grade studies Earth and Physical Science.  Seventh Grade focuses on Life Science including many different topics -all related with living things.  Eighth Grade Earth Science includes many different topics - all related with the earth and space.  Each class takes several field trips throughout the year that pertain to the topics they are studying.

Diverse Explorations (DEX)

Diverse Explorations is a class designed to introduce students to a wide range of experiences. Teachers will expose students to hobbies, crafts, sports, and careers through mini units. Guest speakers will enhance learning and knowledge. Hands on experiences will allow student to develop the skill. Fields trips will be taken when possible. Some topics to be explored are archery, computers, chiropractic, and first aide.
The second part of DEX is to do service for others. The School’s recycling is collected and sorted by DEX students. They will participate in community service projects like food drives.

Language Arts

Sixth grade language arts class uses Open Court as its reading curriculum.  Vocabulary development along with spelling remains a focus area of the class.  Students begin using the Prentice Hall Grammar Book as part of their grammar unit.  Writing journals and the Six Traits writing process is utilized as well.
In seventh and eighth grade the students begin the Wordly Wise vocabulary program which not only works on word definition, but usage, synonyms, antonyms, etymology, and prefixes, roots, suffixes.  A variety of short stories and novels are examined using plot development, character analysis, theme and setting.  They continue using the Prentice Hall Grammar series with the four step process of definition, recognition, function and creation.  Composition includes narration, description, comparison/contrast, and expository.  Students work through each composition with prewriting, drafting, revision, and proofreading.

Novels read in Seventh grade:   Shane, Walk Two Moon, Where the Red Fern Grows, and Holes

Novels read in Eighth grade:  The Outsiders, The Hobbit, The Pearl, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Night.

Journalism Class

Journalism is only open to 8th graders who exhibit a good work ethic, an above average level of writing skills, and, most important, the ability to work independently.  The students design the forty page yearbook online using a variety of tools that allow them to create colorful backgrounds and complex layouts.  Also created is a monthly four-page newsletter, The Green and Gold Gazette, which covers a variety of school activities including sports, classroom activities, assemblies, Masses, retreats and much more.  The student journalists use the program Publisher to format their newsletter and include many photos to enhance the articles.
